Looking to Sunday: Preparing to Hear From God

By Heather Weir

This Sunday we’ll be looking at Matthew 7:15-23. There are lots of images in this set of verses, images of sheep and wolves, and fruit and trees. In preparation for Sunday, have a look at some other places where these images are used in scripture. If you’ve got a concordance or have access to an online Bible (biblegateway.com is a good place to start) search for places where wolves and sheep are mentioned. How are these animal images used in different contexts? Who are wolves? Who are sheep? John 10 is an interesting starting point for the animal images.

Similarly, have a look for places where trees or fruit are used in imagery. What do trees stand for? What does fruit mean? Psalm 1 and John 15 are two places to look for some tree and fruit images.

This week’s sermon continues the ideas of discernment Elaine introduced last week. If you weren’t able to be at the service last week, or if you need a reminder of that sermon, you can listen to it on the Walmer website. As you prepare for Sunday’s service and church business meeting, pray for a spirit of discernment for our congregation.
