Looking to Sunday
by Elaine Poproski
Have you ever been desperate for God? I mean desperate to hear His voice, feel His love, experience His forgiveness? Have you ever been so at the end of your rope – at that place where you have nothing left in you to cope, that you have nowhere else to turn?
I my teen years I walked away from the church and my faith. I didn’t really walk away from God, but He wasn’t central or important in my life anymore (I’m not sure He’d ever been important at that point in my life). I finished high school, took a year off, and eventually ended up at university. But as much as I enjoyed all the learning university afforded me, everything else in my life was off. Today, as I look back on that time, I know that I was missing God in my life. If I’d been more familiar with the Psalms back then, I might have found the words of Psalm 130 to be particularly helpful.
Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord.
Lord, hear my voice!
Let Your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications!
If You, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand?
But there is forgiveness with You, so that You may be revered.
I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
and in His word I hope;
my soul waits for the Lord
more than those who watch for the morning,
more than those who watch for the morning.
O Israel, hope in the Lord!
For with the Lord there is steadfast love,
and with Him is great power to redeem.
It is He who will redeem Israel from all its iniquities.
As you prepare for Sunday, perhaps spend some time with this Psalm. Even if you’re not currently in the depths of despair, try reading this Psalm out loud a few times. What words or phrases resonate with you? Are there any images that come to mind? Might God be saying something to you through this Psalm?
